*Let Narita cook*
Because of my recent rewatch of Durarara (which I consider to be a masterpiece) and my familiarity with other some Narita works (mainly Fate/strange Fake) my expectations for Baccano were extraordinarily high. And long story short they were met and exceeded.
Narita manages to handle an incredibly large and interesting cast once again, while also building one of the most intriguing and rewarding story structures I’ve ever seen.
The characters and their dynamics are truly awesome. We have Miria and Isaac who are two of the most lovable idiots in anime history, then there are Jacuzzi and his gang, Firo, the immortals. The point I’m trying to make is that there isn’t a single boring character or character dynamic in this show and I’m equally invested in most of the characters and storylines, which brings me to the story structure.
This show is so fricking rewarding to watch. Every little detail you learn contributes to the larger picture and when all the dots finally connect it’s incredibly satisfying.
But Narita isn’t the only one who deserves praise for this.
The animation is unique and stylish and the voice actors are great as well, but what I‘d like to praise even more then those things is the damn soundtrack. It starts with the opening, that immediately sets a good tone for the show and is just fun to listen to, then during the rest of the episodes we get plenty more of the jazz score which fits the series very well and also again is just cool music to listen to as it is.
I’ll quickly mention the three special episodes, which I enjoyed but I thought that they were not on the same level as the rest of the show.
So overall Baccano is one hell of an anime and I look forward to reading even more of Narita‘s work!
