Letterboxd has this kind of fantasy appeal to it that if you scroll long enough through enough random lists at 3 AM that you’ll find some ultra obscure masterpiece that like three people have seen. This is very much one of those works.
Boogie Pop phantom is a hyper esoteric skull, melting fever, dream. It is an edgy, darker more experimental version of serial experiments lain which on its own is a pretty crazy statement.
For me, boogiepop phantom’s by far most notable feature is that it possesses what is by far the greatest sound design I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen sound take such an active and commanding roll over a piece of cinema. It starts and stops, distorts, and booms, echoes and reverberates through a cacophony of different emotions. The sound envelops you in an oppressive whirlwind That is Boogiepop phantoms world.
The work that this could most similarly be compared to would definitely be in David Lynch’s inland Empire on a multitude of levels. It is an extremely disjointed incredibly obtuse, unforgiving experience, that will likely be fairly unapproachable to most. To say the least boogie pop phantom is not a light watch and is extremely committed to its vision.
The “plot” is almost completely intangible As Boogiepop phantom frankly doesn’t care it’s not here to tell a story it’s here to deliver emotion. The pain of the past, memories strangling chokehold, the abandonment of oneself, an uncertain future. Boogiepop phantom plunges you into a swirling soup of some absolutely dizzying themes.
I would basically only recommend this for the hard-core fans of the truly abstract and basically no one else. Be prepared for a truly monolithic experience that possesses some of the most fascinating technical elements I have personally seen.
