a series drenched in a thick and hazy melancholic atmosphere that is as slow as it is mesmerising
a bit heady, a bit lost in the clouds, covered in symbolism and themes of spirituality, salvation and the meaning of life and death. i'm definitely unsure as to what it all really means, maybe i gotta watch a 3 hour video essay on it, but what i can say is that it's good!
ofc it's good, it's ol Yoshitoshi Abe, mr Lain himself, and just like Lain it can get quite abstract and surreal (especially that last episode), but Haibane Renmei isn't as grim, dark or confronting in its presentation, instead opting for a much more serene and pastoral feel that is very homely and comfy, even when the themes it's tackling are as challenging and gloomy as they are
might be the medium's answer to the Slow Cinema movement, except that that is very much a stretch. Haibane Renmei is slow, maybe the slowest anime i've seen (outside of Angel's Egg) but it isn't glacial like most films by Tarkovsky. i've heard similar claims for series such as Kino's Journey and especially Mushi-shi (which i really need to get around to soon)
