There’s something about 2000s anime with incredibly low budgets. The aesthetic, the sense of nostalgia that comes with it, and the fact that a lot of good ones usually are never streamed anywhere. (I’m mainly talking about Beck and flcl)
Beck is a series I absolutely love, if you read my flcl review yesterday you’ll know I binged half of this yesterday, and finished it today, and while it did overwhelm and burn me out a little, it was phenomenal.
With a low budget, Beck was able to have an intriguing romance subplot, great lovable characters, and incredible music. (Some of the music by my favorite band, the pillows). With many nods to the rock genre as a whole, this anime feels like a nice tribute to it, and I recommend for anybody who listens to that kind of stuff.
However, the low budget is what makes me remove half a star. There is a lot of noticeable reused frames and the anime about music kind of loses a bit of essence when the band plays the same three songs throughout the entire show. There are also various segments where the scenes drag a bit, and while most of them are accepted due to the 2000s charm, it gets a bit heavy and boring. My last gripe with the show is simply how Maho and Koyuki needed more time together, but besides that, I love Beck.
Beck is absolutely phenomenal, and I am definitely going to read it when a proper English translation comes out. Reading a ton of reviews about people saying they disliked the ending made me nervous, but I thought it was very good and left me with a smile on my face.
I was made to hit in America.
