Naota is a normal boy who kills some time with a normal girl by a stream that flows underneath a bridge. Nothing unusual happens in this town. The fact that Haruhara Haruko crashes into the main character with her Vespa a short while later and subsequently hits him over the head with her Rickenbacker 4003 bass guitar doesn’t really make any difference to any other day here. The at first glance unconnected, bizarre events that don’t seem to follow any pattern whatsoever don’t change anything about Naota’s boring life, either – because nothing incredible ever happens in this town.

Literally one of the coolest animes I’ve ever watched. The rock music, the visual style, the constant shifts in animation, and the pure chaos makes everything feel unforgettable. At first I barely understood what was happening until it became clear that Haruko was literally an alien which somehow still doesn’t explain half of it. But that’s part of why it works; beneath all of that absurdity, it really captures what growing up feels like when you're stuck in that weird stage between childhood and adolescence. Naota’s boredom, his brother’s absence, and the confusing presence of three different girls around him, all of them reflecting different emotional impulses like idealization, hormonal confusion, and eventually a more genuine kind of connection and understanding. It’s strange, nostalgic, and emotionally more real than it first seems. Ugh I got so jealous of a comment that said they’ve watched it on Adult Swim when it was released.
