In “A Place Further Than the Universe”, a quote stood out to me the most. During the girls trip in Singapore, they have a conversation about life both outside and inside Japan. Mari says “Even after we’re gone, this view will remain the same. We’ll head to Antarctica, and then back home to Japan after that, where the boats in the harbor will still come and go, and this city will keep bursting with color and life. Going to school, working their jobs, hanging out with their friends, everyone will keep moving forward and living their lives.” I think this quote stood out to me the most because it brings attention to the everyday workings of life all over the world. While these 4 girls are venturing outside and going to a place away from capitalism, the world is still moving and many people are still trapped in an endless cycle of labor, money, and consumerism. Eventually, the girls will also have to return to this life, but they are learning to live in the moment and appreciate the little time they have away from society while it lasts.
