A bleak, difficult rewatch here in 2025.
As with all historical fiction, Mrs. America takes some creative liberties and details should be taken with a grain of salt. But this cautionary tale about the rise of the religious right in America is still bone chilling in a deeply necessary way.
From the Women’s Lib perspective, it’s a nuanced exploration of the tension and interplay between politics and activism, the need for intersectionality in feminism and the thankless choice between settling for gradual progress versus starting a revolution.
Most devastatingly, it showcases the far right’s impeccable gift for rallying. How different extremist groups are able to put aside their differences and come together in the name of pushing violently sexist, racist and homophobic policy. Sure, everyone’s using each other and there’s no true solidarity. But it’s brutally effective nonetheless
Anyway, the performances are incredible, as are the directing, editing, production design and costumes. I thought Sarah Paulson’s gifts were slightly wasted on the fictional housewife who exists solely to show someone on the right changing their mind, but she did the best with what she was given.
