Anyone else take on a new niche interest every few months and hyper fixate on it obsessively?
No? Just me?
Well, my recent one is chess. Randomly got the urge to play about a month ago and have since become an addict. Now don’t get me wrong, I am horrific at the game, but boy is it fun to play. My ratings could not be much lower, but I am learning bit by bit the complexity of this game and even better learning much of the history of its relevance in geopolitics, especially as it relates to the Cold War.
The show wraps much of the history I’ve learned as of recent up with its own fictitious story. Anya Taylor-Joy is honestly quite exceptional in her role as Beth. She is this deeply troubled, yet exceptional, prodigy. Her deep rooted trauma propels her towards excellence and holds her back over and over.
I greatly wish there was more of this show, but at the same time am quite glad it is just a limited series. In our world of excess content and increasingly slop filled social media feeds, it is refreshing to watch something that feels incredibly human, to the point, and not overdrawn.
