Episode one jumps between the brainstorming of a company called WeWork, Adam's entrepreneurial ambitions, and the degradation of a cringe couple, Adam and Rebekah. Jared Leto's performance bounces between a Tommy Wiseau characterization and Borat. His character's behavior becomes more eccentric as the story progresses. Of course, Anne Hathaway shines, but the themes and metamorphosis kick in by the third episode as she starts to examine her character. Personally, I would jump to episode 8 where the story progresses from this point because episodes 2 through 7 keep rehashing backstories related to the rise and downfall of a company.
In episode two, Adam and Miguel (a business partner) work on getting investors to grow an "idea." The episode shows Adam's clever persuasiveness in manipulating people. I kinda like the creepo vibes and the hollowness of everyone just agreeing with him because of convenience and stupidity. The series changes its structure to focus only on the backstory.
In episode three, Rebekah examines her previous romantic relationship, her career hiccups, and how her father shaped her views. The storylines connect to the modern day with a bad tweet mentioned on social media. At WeWork, Adam creates a frat mentality in the workplace. Also, everything takes place during a summer getaway where everyone is partying.
Episode 4 examines more growth for the company. Rebekah makes a new friend. This episode examines the power dynamics within their relationship which made it boring.
Episode 5: More running around from Adam as he tries to "grow" the global brand. The pacing is starting to feel overlong and everyone is still feeding his narcissism.
Episode 6: Adam and Rebekah isolate themselves at their beach house. Adam increases his eccentricities at work because he faces more scrutiny. Rebekah wants to start a school. The board wants an IPO for the company.
Episode 7: Adam and Rebekah rewrite an S-1 tax document in order to rewrite the EBITA, the potential value of a company. Chloe and Mikey, employees at WeWork, celebrate the potential IPO.
Episode 8: The story progresses at the 12-minute mark.
