Sentimental Value
So many films set up conflict, then build and build to a crescendo where the conflict is resolved in one fell swoop, especially in this genre. A fight, an argument, screaming and yelling. It all comes to fruition with one big punch. What’s so beautiful about this one is that it doesn’t do that at all. It sits in introspection, letting hints of what might possibly lead to an explosion seep out slowly. It’s not till the credit roll that we realize reparations have been made in ways that were not privy to us on a surface level, and maybe not even privy from character to character. So much resolution is made out of subtle performance that it makes the big moments feel even bigger.
I find that a lot of the films I love the most are the ones that create a world I want to sit in. This one feels so comforting to me. Very grateful it exists, and very grateful I got to see it with a large crowd almost 4 months after its wide release.
