Thief
literally every fibre is perfect. like every shot, every sound, every decision has purpose. the city at night looks unreal, all neon reflections and empty streets, and it makes everything feel kind of lonely even when stuff is exploding. the heist scenes are so detailed it’s almost stressful. you’re just watching sparks fly and metal get drilled into for minutes at a time, and every minute is electric. it feels intense because you know how much it matters to him. and frank is such a specific type of guy. he wants the most normal life possible, house, family, stability, but he only knows how to survive through control and force. james caan plays him so tightly wound that when things finally snap it feels earned. it’s cool in that effortless way only mann can do, but it’s also sad. like it knows from the start that this dream was never going to work. blows my mind that this was mann’s sophomore film.
