Sinners
There are legends of people with the gift of making music so true, it can pierce the veil between life and death... conjuring spirits from the past... and the future.
Halloween at Pacific Fair! Much better choice than the disappointment that was Saturday Night last year (it's still SNL 1975 to ME, dammit!)
Earlier this year, I watched this film in a shitty Original screening at Event Chermside. Even then, it was absolutely electrifying work from Coogler and company. I watched it in IMAX today. An unforgettable experience.
As Oscar season inches closer and closer, I'm starting to see more "Sinners is overrated" discourse. It's not uncommon, the instance I remember the most is when it happened with Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Obviously, people are entitled to their opinions, but I don't buy into that take for a second. This is as blood-pumpingly brilliant as I first saw it, and I think I actually have more appreciation for the film on a second watch. I've never seen the Scene of the Year become an instantly undeniable thing until Miles Caton opened his mouth and sang the house down.
My first IMAX viewing was for the incredible One Battle After Another, which thanks to the VistaVision aspect ratio fills the entirety of the 1.90:1 IMAX screen. This is my first IMAX film with shifting ratios, and that's almost an entirely new experience in itself. It's one thing to see I Lied to You with the ratio change at home, it's a whole other thing to view it on the biggest screen in Queensland.
