Somewhere
This movie saves lives. Maybe corona virus would’ve never happened if this movie was better advertised as the late 2000s, post-modern masterpiece that it is. There isn’t a movie on earth that depicts depression as well as this; or disappointment. What it means to be a child of divorce. What it means to go through a divorce. What it means to have a child that you love to no end... would do anything for. To spoil and love and pamper and take care of them until they leave.
The ice skating scene made me violently weep this time. I think it’s because Sofia Coppola, in her mastery, makes me realize what it feels like to create another human being, and to watch them succeed and excel at something so beautifully that it makes being alive in this god awful world, somehow worth it.
When he orders gelato for his daughter: “we’d like to try them all. Send up two of each.” You feel what it means to love a child... so without compromise... that its devastating. Their late night snack... the quiet kiss on the cheek as he tells her goodnight... that’s what it means to be alive.
And yet?? We hate the guy. HES AWFUL! Affair after affair. Strippers and prostitutes up the wazoo. He seems to think money can fix it all. His one redeeming factor is the relationship with his daughter. Much like bob fosse in all that jazz (WHICH! Sofia cites as one of her greatest influences!!!), this despicable, horrible man is such a wonderful father. Even at his worst moments... we know he would do anything for his daughter.
This movie is my crack. My cryptonite. My... existential relief. It’s a reminder that we all are terrible and all are great, and that being both is okay. Because that’s what it means to live
