Below is a masterfully crafted psychological supernatural horror film set on a submarine, a genre of film that has never been replicated since, at least not to this standard.
The film is incredibly well directed, with amazing continuous shots through the different compartments of the submarine, dare I say better than many war films set in similar locations. The acting is solid, especially from Bruce Greenwood as Brice. The film had a low budget, but still looks great and holds up excellently over 20 years later.
However, Below didn't receive a proper theatrical release, as the Weinstein brothers, who owned Dimension at the time, didn't like the fact that director David Twohy leaned more into suspense and mystery than supernatural, in-your-face campy horror. I think this was a big mistake from the studio and Below could have been a hit with better marketing and a better release.
However, I felt the film could been a bigger beast, with a predictable twist and some campy jump scares, I fear the Weinsteins and Dimension intervened too much on director David Twohy's original vision of a more psychological thriller set on a submarine, similar to films like Sphere and Secret Window, but it ended up being a little bit too much like a 'haunted house' underwater, more like Event Horizon, which is by no means bad, but a little unoriginal for such a great premise.
Overall, Below is an incredibly underrated horror film that fans of movies like The Hunt for Red October and Event Horizon should definitely give a watch.
