Materialists
It's unfortunate how people call this broke men propaganda bc calling it that is such a male-centered take. It centers the love triangle aspect of the story more and it reduces it to "team edward vs team jacob" discourse, when that's not celine song's intention with this movie at all.
I've learned from past lives (and challengers) that song (and her partner - justin kuritzkes) loves to use love stories as vehicles to drive the point of the movie. in past lives she used it to explore identity and immigration and in materialists she used it to question how has capitalism shaped the way we date, how do we foster love in relationships where power differentials exist and also how do we love each other when the dating industry has reduced us to parts and then commodified? can love exist and can it be genuine?
and i see ppl complain about how she didn't successfully get this point across, but idk? for me it was so obvious? from the beginning where lucy and her coworker were taking about sophie as if she was an item to be sold with no "market" and the sequence where she's talking to the men that she's match making demanding her bits and pieces of his ideal woman... like he loves these fragments....? but he is unable to love a full-whole person? and obviously we also see this in lucy's relationship with harry (pedro pascal) - he speaks to her s if they're negotiating a business deal and in one point she says "he makes me feel valuable" and is that love? feeling valued? or does she feel like an object investment? harry is a business man investing in her, they understand each other in a business sense but that's not love
i also see this as a cautionary tale for cis gendered women dating cis gendered men - they will always sacrifice a part of themselves when they choose a man be it identity, autonomy, comfort/wealth etc... because that is how patriarchy has shaped dating and relationships???
and finally no one talks about the meat of this movie (the sexual assault plot line) - that IS the biggest sacrifice and risk in dating as a woman i think it's a realistic addition to the storyline and sofie's plot line is a reality for many women who are on dating apps and again, dating apps can put all the precautions they want but they will always view users as stats and data and actual care for their experience will never be given bc at the end of the day it's just profit!
my fave scene in this movie is the cavemen sequence the entire time i was watching the film i kept thinking about how far we've gone as a species and was it all simple then? how much did we change and what have we done to each other?
ALSO can i just say dakota johnson i love u and i love your bangs thank you <3 this is the perfect role for her bc she is just so charming, but dead pan and i know not a lot of people get it or like it but i do, i know exactly what she's doing, she's my hero
