Lost Highway
Alright well I don't really know what to think of this. I had very mixed thoughts about this at insanely many parts.
First act
Bland and just decent building things up nothing crazy. This gave the film an decent start but I think this film still was very bland here.
Second act A
Very much having trouble keeping a good track. I think when Payton gets introduced, its pretty hard to be entertained by this film but as we go deeper into Alice and Payton's relationship it indeed does get interesting.
Second act B
This act is amazing just brilliant. Like now it gets so great with so many things at stake. Alice and Payton's desperate run from the chaos is so interesting to watch.
Third act
The finisher. Definitely amazing and this and second act B made this film what it is. I'm not joking when I say I was normally giving this an 2.5 stars but the second act B and third act came in with the clutch.
I think just the problem with this film is that its only GREAT when we get into Fred's mind. Payton's story is far more interesting than whatever was happening in the first act. The second half carries this film by ease and finally gives us complex and interesting characters that we have been waiting for the whole film. I KNOW that the first half is a setup but the first half is so PAINFUL and it could have been done in so many better ways.
The characters of this film are insanely good. Alice being such a weird character and Payton being higher than the clouds add so much atmosphere to this film. I really don't know what Lynch is doing with his characters but man they are weird and great.
The writing of this film is just amazing. It all making sense in the end and Fred getting executed for murdering his wife because of deep jealousy over her cheating. It was all in his head, the whole thing with Payton and it comes to light at the end of the film. This film is structured so well but its also so trippy that we are in Fred's literal mind in this film and that is what wins my respect for this film. Writing at its finest.
The atmosphere also does win me over pretty well. My favorite part about this film by far is us being in this fever dream adventure. David Lynch makes sure every single one of his work is just one big trippy adventure. This atmosphere just makes this film what it is.
Lost Highway was for sure something that did win me in the end even though it did disappoint me at first. I've never had such a big switch from hating a film to loving a film. Could even score higher on a rewatch since then I know what to expect.
