Lost Highway
I actually can't believe it. I returned to rewatch this because I felt like something wasn't right from my last watch. Like this film was meant to be in my top films but just wasn't the right time to watch it. Well I returned and this film returned a lot to me as well.
Atmosphere is something else. This is my favorite atmosphere of any David Lynch film. The nightmare and neo-noir atmosphere is insanely great and the night shots just bump this up more. The desert looks so cool at night and that weird scene is shot weirdly well considering its just sex but its still shot in a way where its like unnatural so it kind of makes it visually pleasing because its in the sand with the night sky which I cannot explain but I think most of you get my point.
The performance of Patricia Arquette is great. She does an dual performance so well and she seems like two different characters. She shifts effortlessly between Renee, a cold, emotionally detached wife, and Alice, a classic blonde, highly sexualized femme fatale.
I also love the way the whole point of this film was made. Because Fred is so afraid that Renee is cheating on him he decides to kill her and this puts himself in a denial, guilt and shameful state. He cannot take it, the guilt is too strong, so he puts himself into a life where the troubles don't come to him. But in this dream we can literally see his jealousy still light very brightly.
Because he's constantly asking Alice if he liked having sex with other men and you can see him always wanting Alice to be his only but Alice tells him "You'll never have me". Then he even walks into a bathroom where Alice is having sex and Alice says "Ask me why". His jealousy is constantly showing in his dream and that's what makes the rewatchability worth it. By projecting Renee's past onto Alice he project his blame and guilt from himself into Alice to not accept the fact that he's a murderer
I was wrong about the first act being bad. I was so wrong because it's incredible. It's so good and so is every single act. Everything is crafted so well. The first act is horror, complete horror. Like this film manages to introduce you to the horror genre as well which is incredible because its insane how scary the first act is. Its actually disturbing. And the Mystery Man doesn't make it any much better
Second act A is incredible as well. I think the weakest by far but still great at managing the action well. I think this has a lot of interesting moments as well but I think the other acts offer way much more to the audience. Second act B is incredible. The build up to the final act. Here Fred's jealousy gets louder and the film gets so much more tense and weird. Every scene is so thrilling that its hard not to watch.
And now c'mon the third act is the absolute best easily. Nothing comparable to the others. Just perfect like actual perfection. So much happening and so much weird scenes as well as so many peaks. Robbing Andy is so tense, the desert scene is fantastic,, the climax is incredible and the ending hits so much.
The Mystery Man is also so great. He makes this film so scary and brings in that horror element. I love how it's just Fred's mind and The Mystery Man represents Fred's buried guilt, shame, unchecked jealousy and sadistic inner darkness. He's written so well into the story that this little dude alone wraps so much of the story.
Lost Highway you have even surpassed Mulholland Drive which is so shocking. David Lynch has probably now turned into my favorite director of all time after this watch.
