Before Sunset
“It was raining, and I thought I saw you, not far from the church folding up an umbrella, walking into a deli on the corner of Broadway and Thirteenth. I thought I was hallucinating, and now I know it probably was you.”
If there is a movie that makes me think about missed opportunities, it’s this one. Things that could have been said, things that could have been done, how people’s lives could be completely different if one event had played out in a different way. For an eighty minute movie, there is so much to unpack here, literally full throttle on the emotion the entire time. Even right from the beginning when they mixed scenes from Before Sunrise in, oh my god.
There were numerous times where my heart broke for both Jesse and Celine. The looming prospect of the 10:00pm flight added the perfect amount of tension, the marriage reveal made me put my head in my hands, and the entire car scene is so well done that you feel like you’re in the car with them, going through the same thing. Just some amazing work from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. It takes some great acting to make two people talking for a whole movie this enthralling.
This is probably my favourite sequel to a movie of all time. While it may not measure up to the first one for me and I didn’t cry this time, it is still an incredible film. I’m so happy this movie exists because I don’t know what I would have done if we had just been left with the ending of the original.
