Kaboom
Watching this again made me yearn for a Gregg Araki movie set in the 2020s so bad, I just need to know what he would do.
I’ve heard a lot of people call this movie outdated and honestly I can understand where they’re coming from but man, it’s very 2010s for a reason. It’s the same as Araki’s 90s movies, they’re very 90s and seem really cool now because it’s been 30 years. Now I’m not saying that in 2040 people will be watching Kaboom as a relic (except myself) but I think people need to cut it some slack.
Kaboom fits in with the Gregg Araki cannon so well. After The Living End, Totally Fucked Up, The Doom Generation and Nowhere we went through a Gregg Araki gay apocalypse drought. While Mysterious Skin and Smiley Face are awesome movies they were clearly intended to be different than Araki’s works in the 90s. I view Kaboom as a return to this cannon and what made me love Gregg Araki so much in the first place. Which is why I love this movie so much and why I pray that this isn’t his last film of the sort.
Yes it’s weird, yes there’s a LOT of sex, and yes it’s messy but that’s what I love about Gregg Araki and that’s what I love his movies for. Give me more of this and I’ll never complain again.
