Kaboom
It’s always so much fun to show this movie to someone who has never seen it, especially if they don’t know much about Gregg Araki. Somehow it took me three watches to realize how unbelievably campy this movie is but I honestly still love it.
I think the best part of this to me is how Araki took every rule of the late 2000s and early 2010s film industry and threw it out the window to bring back his classic queer apocalypse style. In a time of franchises and huge, overproduced movies, Araki stuck to his guns and made a movie that kept so many of the elements I loved from his 90s movies alive. Sure, it might seem outdated, the outfits are violently 2010 and the acting and dialogue clash with the time period it was made in. But you can’t tell me that if this was released in the 90s it wouldn’t be a queer cult classic just like all of Araki’s other films. I’m just so grateful to him for continuing to produce this kind of media because it’s necessity never disappeared.
