Dune: Part Two
(here's my little bite-sized review, I rant about dune (with spoilers!) more down below if you want to read that whole mess)
So much messier and more bombastic than Part One but offers so much more, and such an incredible movie to see on the biggest screen you can. I am in so much awe over how this movie was made.
I'm so sorry I genuinely don't think I can talk about this, the Dune fan side of me has completely taken over. I have no idea how to review this like a normal movie. Normal me is actually so gone, all that's left is Dune me. I don't want to leave a long review but how do I not talk about every aspect of this film in length. How do I do that?? I've read three of the books, seen the original movie, the jodorowsky documentary, and dune 2021 like 8 times by now. I don't think I'll ever be able to view this series normally
Here's some things:
- I love the score so much, it feels like Hans Zimmer just took all the music he made for Part 1 and added electric guitar to all of them. It's so bombastic and chaotic but very precise
- feels so much messier than Part 1, but it also gives you so much more substance and things to chew on
- I'm fine acknowledging that we've reached a point with CGI that I will never understand. I'll never be able to fully grasp how this movie was made and that's so okay
- I love the changes they made to Chani's character, it gives the viewer something to grab onto with all the shifting dynamics in play
- makes me want to re-read Messiah so bad
- love how it gets into the differences between the ideologies of the fremen, it's really refreshing to see them presented not as a monolith but as a people with very diverse beliefs even within their own communities
- my mom's thoughts on the emperor: "He's such a weird looking guy"
- so many interesting ideas about the nature of revolt, and how political and social movements can be hijacked and changed to the point where they aren't even fighting for what they were originally
- godddddd I loved this so much, Timmy C did such a great job somehow simultaneously playing a charismatic little white boy and also future tyrannical overlord, and his villain arc is so well done
- such a great choice not to have Alia be born yet, there's just no possible way to film that seriously
- oh my god the scene of all the fremen riding into the final battle, but you can see that they're flying the Atreides banner. So much to unpack there ahh I'm freaking out
- gaaaah movies are back, sci-fi is back, religious space politics are so back, I am exhilarated
-OH MY GOD ALSO they finally let Gurney sing on his little baliset that's all I wanted to see and they delivered
#theater#dune fever 🦧#w/ mom :)#imax#i read the book 🧍♂️
