Shaolin Soccer
I take it back, I don't think this is his funniest movie, but it's definitely the most satisfying. Stephen Chow is seriously the master of slapstick, absurdist humour, that he somehow turns these insanely insane scenes into pure poetry that only service the themes of the movie. I love the movies he starred in before he adopted the directorial role, but it really feels like, at least with Shaolin Soccer, all his experience acting in wonderfully absurd Hong Kong comedies turned him into probably the best to ever do it.
Even Ah Mui's humiliation, which I didn't like on the first watch, makes so much thematic sense on a second watch. To achieve enlightenment, one must first undergo humilation and true suffering.
I love this movie. Everyone has that one comedy that they love dearly...I think I finally found mine.
