Pickpocket
1959's Pickpocket is really the best case of lesser is more. The film is so simple yet so moving, so tiny yet has much weight to it and by the end you feel both empty yet marked by something. Its definitely not for everyone, despite it's short runtime of 76 minutes the film moves quite slowly and unless you pay full attention the film could probably lose you and it did for me at some parts but for me it is both a frustrating yet wonderfully draining and suspenseful experience that examined and studied its core subjects and characters in such a simple yet effective manner. Robert Bresson's direction is simple but constant and holds slight touches of beauty of both realism yet artifice, the performances are well realise especially Martin LaSalle as Michel and Marika Green as Jeanne. The story and the very film itself is both transcending in its descending into its themes and characters as well as enlightening in its simple yet compelling approach to filmmaking. Pickpocket is extraordinary ugly and unforgiving in such a way where its unforgettable and enigmatic.
