Django Unchained

Woah. Following up Inglorious Basterds, which wildly exceeded expectations, we have Django Unchained, which did the exact same thing. After much thought, I do prefer the former a little bit more, but this still took my breath away. Tarantino has such a style where he creates these stories around famous times and makes these fictional characters become so important in those times. He creates such a world in this film that feels very authentic, especially with the accents, the production design, and of course, the mainstake of all Tarantino, the witty and the incredibly realistic dialogue. His writing skills are absolutely insane. He makes these movies seem almost like bloody spoofs of popular genres.
Jamie Foxx gives an amazing performance as Django. He’s one of the coolest characters I’ve ever seen in a movie by being so ambiguous and even intimidating a slave owner. Leonardo DiCaprio also gives an amazing performance but his character is the exact opposite, where he’s one of the most despicable characters in cinema. Calvin Candie is so unbelievably hateable that you really can’t wait to see him get killed. And speaking of, Christoph Waltz gives a barrier breaking performance as Dr. King Schultz. He’s really likable and his relationship with Django is so fun to see progress and to watch them work and kill together. Whether I like him more in this or Inglorious Basterds is a very tough battle, but I think I’m gonna go with Hans Landa, just because of how unpredictable he is. And lastly Samuel L Jackson gives in my opinion his best performance he’s ever given as Stephen. He’s just as despicable as Calvin, and Jackson just disappears into this role.
The action in this movie is phenomenal and way over the top which really adds to the satirical feel of the film. The blood and gore is, again, cranked to 100 here, giving the movie such intense yet fun action sequences. The cinematography here is fantastic the quick cuts and the wide shots really pulls off the spaghetti western feel. You can tell Tarantino and his whole cast and crew really cared about perfecting this movie to exactly what they wanted. He turns this tough subject into an amazing and awesome story. It’s insane how crazy and fun the third act is. Besides a good 10 minutes from the middle act and 10 minutes from the last act I’d cut out, there are no flaws I have with this movie. It’s just so awesome.
