Phantom Thread
"an air of quiet death" as Reynolds says about the house is also fitting for the entire movie, and I don't necessarily mean it in a good way.
the film is definitely one of the most elegant movies I've seen, with an equally elegant score. honestly if I had the read the premise of this movie from any other director, I definitely wouldn't be that willing to watch it; I played it because it's directed by PTA, and he did somewhat hold up for me. he holds this movie's focus quite well to it's 2 main characters - at least better than most would I think.
either way though, I feel like the actual plot of the movie would have been worked better as an underlying tone about their relationship as these 2 characters are involved in a greater plot. I just think there simply isn't enough substance here. this is only my second PTA movie, and whilst I don't think this reaches even close to TWBB, I still think he directed this well, and it would probably be a disaster without him at the helm.
that's why I still give this movie a 6/10 - it's certainly not bad on all technical aspects and has some interesting themes, and definitely great performances, but there isn't enough to connect with here for me. it's an interesting movie, but maybe PTA's vision doesn't shine through for me as well as he'd hoped.
