I don’t know if it’s his best but this is definitely PTA’s funniest movie. We’re very fortunate to have gotten this at the time we did from him. Coming off of TWBB and The Master he must have really felt like he could take some swings. This source material fits where he was as a director perfectly and it caps off one of the best three film runs of all time. Phoenix embodies the role perfectly and the bizarro version of LA that is presented is a wonderful stage for the foggy narrative that unfolds. Fantastic exploration of paranoia at its core with so much else spiraling out from that.
