A Clockwork Orange
From what it feels like right now, I’ll never be able to get this movie out of my head
Kubrick has said that a great film gives you a feeling you can’t describe, and it is no wonder he says this on account of the fact that he is the best director at doing this. The first hour and about 15 minutes of this film is not only one of the most entertaining pieces of cinema I have ever seen, but may very well be the most complex in that of I don’t know what to feel. Violence is stylized while also at some points being incredibly disturbing, but I cannot look away.
“Singing in the rain”, is sung by Alex at one point as he has broken into a house, injuring one of the owners and hurting and raping the other. Without the song it would just be this horrible thing to look at and most every sane person would just be looking away for the entire seen. But with that added tune, “oh, I love this song”, “man this is catchy”, is what goes on through your head. You don’t know what to feel. you shouldn’t be having ANY fun, but it’s so intriguing.
On to the second part of the film where Alex is in prison, is the weakest part of the film by a slight margin. It is where we really get to see where the story is going, but coming to this part of the film after that other worldly first part feels like whatever the opposite of whiplash is. By no means is it bad though. In fact, I am still very engaged with the film and am not bored at all. Finally we begin to see the underlying themes and everything is coming together from a metaphorical standpoint. Where the knot really gets tied however comes to the end.
The last third of A Clockwork Orange is where we are asked how we feel about the situation, and how it connects to our world. After all by the end, Alex is still the same person he was at the start of the film, the only difference is he just can’t physically commit his actions, bringing up the question, is it what you are on the inside that defines you, are what you do.
Watched on blu-ray, 100 inch TV with surround sound, so I can safely say the viewing was miles ahead of my first (that just being on an IPad during a road trip). Not only this but I believe A Clockwork Orange can always be appreciated much more as you mature with film. There is something about the movie that strikes a film lover differently than your everyday casual viewer. I love this movie so much. For how addicting it is, how disturbingly satisfying it is, but big surprise I guess another Kubrick masterpiece.
