Heat
Yeah I like my crime sagas to be the most dramatic and electric displays of obsessive men who can’t get out of their own way so to me this is pretty clearly the definitive showing of both sides of that crime coin throughout a Los Angeles that is so noticeably styled by Mann, the notorious capturer of masculinity being a driving force until it folds inwards on his characters like it’s meant to do and always does. Operating with stoic professionalism while doing what you consider to be your life’s purpose yet unraveling at a human level on the home front is just another thing that I love being portrayed in these films of his. The only jobs we see them perform however go from bad to worse as we witness where years of punishing yourself in this aimless pursuit gets these particular people.
*“That’s pretty vacant”
“That’s the discipline”*
Ending comes back to show where these personal addictions get them with the poetic final shot it provides as they never are able to separate who they are and what they do.
