Heat
“Because I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it, because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge. Where I gotta be” -Vincent Hana
“What the hell you proud of me for” -Donald Breedan
“The last thing I am is married. I’m a needle starting at zero going the other way, a double blank. Then all of a sudden…someone like you comes along.” -Neil McCauley
All of these quotes occur in back to back to back scenes and I really defines how carefully every character is rendered to me. So rarely do you see full characters getting moments to shine that are strictly meant to be background players that are woven into the main fabric of every motion. All these rewatches later I notice that despite this camaraderie between crime obsessed professional is that everyone is so spread out. Spread out emotionally, physically they stay away whenever not working to avoid risk, even their goals for the future are completely spread thin depending on each person. Obsessed with staying exactly who they think they’re supposed to be and as things close down it’s made so apparent that they’re was never a choice in the matter for these gentleman, even those who’ve seemingly made away with their moral code intact have never been further away from their goal total removal from society as they cling to the only thing they know.
The sound furthermore harbors the quiet reassurance of nothing unfolding and to our fleeting obsessions that this is peace, broad daylight operating, waiting to engage at your calling in the world. When it’s not quiet, you have volume that’s so loud it reverberates through you’re entire skeleton as if to signify the just how unprepared you really are for the outcome that you have absorbed into your purpose. I turn this on when I need to confirm that I’m still human, a person who’s acknowledging of what ails him but can’t ever really break from from the notion that I can continue without this path guiding me. Like Hanna and McCauley say “I don’t know how to do anything else and I don’t want to either”.
“All I am, is what I’m going after….”
Put the whole screenplay on my hedge stone, have it playing on a loop in my coffin etc. etc. This means something to me. My cat Marvin watched for the first time and loved it, proud cat dad moment to say the least.
