Se7en
Double viewing with The Batman to end my Halloween, just absolutely phenomenal and it will probably be my new tradition. This changed the actual game for thrillers, detective displays and film entirely showing you can create an unforgettable, tonally weighted experience even if it’s pure and grounded dread. I think so much of this dialogue throughout is profound and can be applicable to nearly every generation of societal outlook in one way or another. Working hand in hand with the fact that we are dropped into an unnamed city with no discernible locations or product placements to give away where we might be or what time allowing the events to seem more than plausible, however dark they may seem. Of course the various writings that explicitly follow The Divine Comedy are wide open so you can easily plug and play elements like Mills and Somerset being stand ins for Dante and Virgil which has been done for years when talking about this film however this was the first time I noticed in I don’t know how many rewatches that Mills and his wife Tracy own 3 massive dogs possibly resembling Cerberus; the multi-headed guard dog preventing the release of beings from hell. My mind will never not be blown how Se7en was made at all from a technical standpoint but also forcing his way to get the unforgettable ending and for a second feature film from Fincher is just a preposterous level of talent.
