The Lighthouse
A have plenty of films that’s I’ve found myself only getting more attached to as time goes on. The Lighthouse by Robert Eggers has consumed at least some portion of my brain’s energy every single day since I’ve first laid eyes on it in 2019 with no exaggeration to be had. Suspicion grows as everything collapses, even the things that you think have made up your life come into question due to the layers of deceptions placed by “old” and then succumbed to by “young”.
Wanting a chance to earn the work that you think will set up the foundation of your life only to soon learn there is no such foundation and if there is, it will be held out of reach while your crumble trying to reach it. While this is happening, old watches unwilling to extend a hand but actively exacerbate and gaslight the young man spiraling as he’s seeking answers yet finding none. The boredom of life threatens to break you long before anything else will. What lengths will you push yourself to find whatever it is you’re after? A chance to be free from the torment of knowing you’ve wasted your life. Old scoffs at your efforts at every turn while lying about every possible detail from his existence. Both old and young could find themselves existing together perhaps even sharing consolation within their struggle but the confrontation has been surging through their bones before they even meet and has been a struggle that transcends generations. The powerplay of wanting control of your own life versus others determined to not sacrifice their position.
Young and old.
Physically load coal into the foghorn- your job is complete while warning others of the coast, you experience noticeable discomfort while continuing the pursuit. This physical offload leads to mental scrutiny when you begin asking things like “is this the right way?” Or “is this all there is?” It’s upsetting and confronting when your own facade cracks your spirit to its core before it’s revealed that the lack of answers could have been explained but wasn’t. Doubtful it would have been accepted with the stubbornness of youth but never being given the chance is life’s true nightmare.
A comprehensive masterpiece I could talk about this work of art everyday for the rest of my life since it plays continuously on a loop in my mind. Robert Eggers is him and I’m there for the first showing of Nosferatu.
