Before Sunset
It’s been just about a year since I last saw these films (in a theater no less!) and I know this is kind of a lukewarm take, but I think this is my favorite of the trilogy. There’s something kind of beautiful in the fact that we get to see the imperfections of these two characters, people who have become a bit worn down compared to how they were in the first film full of optimism. It really opens up their conversations to be a bit more personal like Jessie opening up about being unhappy in his marriage or Celine complaining about the people she’s dated over the last nine years. It just really allows the film to have this sense of reality but still be a bit fantastical compared to before midnight which is more of a cynical film I feel.
Mild spoilers, I know I’m dumb but it never clicked until this watch that Celine wrote the song at the end as a way to hopefully find Jessie, just as he wrote his book as a way to find her, and I think that’s so beautiful!
