the number of essays that can be written about this is insane, so i’ll try not to go crazy.
the cinematography is its own weird thing. it’s been shot for being 3D and now it’s just jarring and lacks the great, more picturesque, shots that are indicative of these technicolor musicals.
now, the most interesting conversation about this film is the one about curly, jud, and laurey. because jud is bad, on a lot of counts. he’s lives in a dirty home filled with pornography covering his walls, and when he had the chance to enact violence on laurey, he did. but that doesn’t make curly, aunt eller, and the town’s treatment of jud as a whole right either. i think that taking out “lonely room” from the film really makes you think about the relationship between these three as way more black and white than it actually is. i would love to see a stage production of this, specifically the 2019 revival, for this exact reason.
i don’t really have the thinking capacity to say more bc i need to sit on this for about 4-7 more business days. also this makes me think i’m going to rewatch i’m thinking of ending things so look forward to that review at some point.
