Interstellar
Watching again as masters project research and I will never not get goosebumps from Zimmer’s score or the incredibly unique and scientifically-based take on space and space perception. My master's project revolves around just that — how do we perceive space and how would space make us feel? I’ve found a lot of the time with space films that we just tend to see the same images, images based on data and content we have seen from platforms like NASA. Interstellar does something different with its visuals, the way it is filmed and framed is completely different and its aesthetic and conceptual approach is just mind-blowing and completely unique in its character, I’ve never seen anything quite like it yet and it continues to mesmerise me to this day.
Visualising a black hole, not only that but travelling through a black hole, visualising a wormhole, presenting time in a physical dimension are all absolutely absurd by themselves. Interstellar manages to present these vast, abstract conceptual theories in a visual medium, a digestible medium — something that, to me, hasn't ever been achieved at such a scale and accessible level. Being inside a black hole is something we will never be able to imagine, and being in space is something we probably won't either, so it's pieces of media like this that bring us as close as we can get to experience these things.
The writing does have its weak points sure, and I do think there was a lot more untapped potential here — but its production is immaculate and McConaughey's performance is stunning. For me it lies somewhere between 8/10 and 9/10 — it jumps between every time I watch it.
Also, the docking sequence is undoubtedly one of the best and most impressive cinematic moments in film ever.
