Scream
edit: oh how my opinions have changed since i watched cause after three years, i’d call this a mediocre installment at best..
this movie is hands down always going to be one of my favorites because it was such a nice way of reinventing the franchise for the future films. it brought a new cast of characters to deal with the infamous ghostface killers, and it did it in such a nice way that included the legacy characters without giving them main character status. although there are multiple flaws that came with this film, i can happily say i’ll put all of them aside to enjoy this movie every single time, for the most part.
it was very nice to see an even more modernized version of the scream element. the opening to this film was very nice, and the entire alarm system at the carpenter house always freaks me out. jenna was acting her ass off during that scene, and she did excellent. while this isn’t my favorite scream opening, it’s definitely up there because it’s such an homage to the original — i love how tara even fell victim to the caller’s trick question. i’m also very fond of the history made as she was the only opening to not actually die thus far, that’s fun. her being injured throughout the entire movie brought something that the others never had, very unique, plus i really enjoy the hospital scene as amber slowly treks behind her wheelchair. i really love the characters in this movie, and they are definitely a step up from the fourth’s lackluster characters (besides a select few). the actors selected to play the roles were also great choices who made the characters way more enjoyable. personally, i am a huge fan of dylan minnette, so i immediately fell in love with wes whenever i first saw him, but i can also admit that i wouldn’t care for him as much had he not been played by dylan. i feel like that’s a common theme for the majority of people who enjoy this movie; as in, it would not nearly be ranked as high as it is had it not had such a perfect cast. the killers for this installment were also very nice, an interesting duo to say the least, but once again the motive falls short of being anywhere near somewhat good. yes, it is interesting, but cmon be serious. i am very shocked to say that richie actually grew on me a lot due to this rewatch — i’ve always liked him, but he’s actually moved up on my killer rankings as well. i can’t write a review for this film without mentioning the literal tears brought to my eyes during that one slow motion scene of gale at the hospital, it gets me every goddamn time. this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but there’s so many survivors in this one.. for such brutal killers, there’s such little carnage. i know dewey died, but there’s no loss there for me — david arquette’s acting was rather mid to me anyways. i understand why there needed to be a lot, for the franchise’s future, but it still irks me in a way. it’s something i enjoy but also don’t? if that makes sense.. while not a perfect film, scream five will go down in history for revitalizing scream as a whole. at least it’s self aware in its requelness.
this has been such an excellent rewatch of the entire scream franchise, and i can’t wait to do all of it again right before the sixth film hits theatres. scream will always have a special place in my heart, and with these new characters that i adore, i never see that changing as the films continue to release. one of the best parts about rewatching all of them was witnessing my opinions changing right in front of me, and believe me, they did change quite a bit. it was very nice to show all of these films to rachael, and i hope she enjoyed this just as much as i did.
to wes, beautiful son of a bitch.
