Lost Highway
“I like to remember things my own way…”
Well.
Lost Highway is wild. Very wild. I have no clue if I’m meant to be following one narrative, two or none. This is most I’ve struggled to understand a Lynch film yet, there is a lot to digest here.
Yet, I still enjoyed this.
I love analog horror, it’s something I always enjoy seeing implemented into film and, alongside Fire Walk With Me, this is the closest Lynch has gotten to a true Horror film, it’s sort of like his answer to The Shining. I noticed a lot of parallels between the two, especially amongst the characters of Jack Torrence and Fred Madison, but i’ll save that for a review of The Shining.
The Soundtrack too, good lord. Lou Reed, David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins. The Perfect Drug also happens to be my favourite song by Nine Inch Nails.
Not my favourite Lynch film though. In a way I think I would like this a lot more if I saw it before Mulholland Drive, as I feel that film covers a lot of the same ground as this, but better.
Only Dune, Wild at Heart and Inland Empire remain to be seen in Lynch’s filmography. Definitely my favourite filmmaker.
EDIT 04/07/2024: Really felt the effects of this film during the night, I was terrified the Mystery Man would be outside.
