Moneyball
Perfect, actually. Immaculate script, immaculate control of tone, immaculate example of how to hit beats at just the right volume and for the right duration. Sorkin’s best scripts are always the ones directed by people who keep his worst impulses in check. I watched this while reading the script simultaneously and there are so many times where on the page a scene or dialogue exchange will go on for so long and the movie is perfectly edited to still keep his wit but without letting him be his full annoying self. The result is everything a movie should be: a fully-realized, complex, but subtle look at something people think they know but really don’t, that’s smarter than you, but also has a full heart and drama and can make you laugh. Easily the best sports movie ever made and something that ought to be studied.
