Seven Samurai
Kurosawa’s has a frightening ability to tell stories through everything at his disposal. It might be the lowest stakes I’ve seen from an “epic”, but there is no other movie that can make me feel this immersed. I feel like I understood the village and its people. Their way of life, good and bad, being a central focus adds weight to the looming threat of bandits. Over time it stops feeling like there is anything other than the village. Losing feels akin to the end of the world.
