Avengers: Infinity War
When Simpin' Hard Goes Wrong
Genocidal maniac Thanos searches for the infinity stones to destroy half the universe's population. If only he knew that four years later, everyone would be suffering under runaway inflation, supply issues, crop desiccation, and warfare.
One of my favorite movie theater experiences: during the scene after Thanos snaps his fingers and visits child Gamora, a child sitting in front of me asks his father, "What's happening?" Then the child proceeds to clutch on to his father while all his favorite Marvel characters die. Naturally, I was howling with laughter. Which brings me to my next point, the scene with child Gamora after Thanos snaps his fingers provides a lot of context (maybe subtext) on what the film is trying to say. Does he regret the choices he made? Is he trying to confide in her his "understanding" of the main goal? Could it be satisfaction or guilt or some subconscious delusion asking for forgiveness? To my surprise, there's a couple of themes within the film as well. The main one being that sacrifice is love. Or, should some one be willing to sacrifice for the greater good? Other themes include repugnancy, nihilism specifically existential and moral nihilism, and "late stage capitalism" (there's this running motif within Marvel movies about western ideology or something that someone smarter than me can figure out).
All these questions and themes get sort of muddled. Because it's a Marvel movie. They're always following through with this antiquated system of beliefs. The big one being altruism. Another being that the "fate" narrative they constantly use to structure their scripts (honesty, I have no clue how they structure their scripts, but it always tends to feel the same).
