Avengers: Infinity War
I figured it out: Infinity War is a sermon about Christian nationalism, dressed up in purple. It believes suffering becomes meaningful when a father sanctifies it, when violence secures a future for the children who remain. Thanos does not see himself as a brute. He sees himself as a chosen patriarch, righteous enough to wound the universe. Thanos's love for Gamora is sincere, which reflects a frightening truth. Sincerity does not cleanse the violence. It sanctifies it. Infinity War keeps returning to the same poisonous idea: sacrifice becomes noble when a powerful man frames it as destiny, legacy, and love.
Salvation depends on a divine rapture through managed suffering. Child Gamora (or Gamora on the altar) represents the most sacred offering. Not merely symbolizing grief, Infinity War imagines salvation through extermination, organized by paternal conviction, and wrapped in the language of mercy. Tony and Peter’s relationship mirrors this in softer terms. Peter’s death turns into an intimate pain reflecting past mistakes. It collapses inward into Tony’s private anguish, his guilt, his need to endure the pain of stewardship. That is the film’s ideological trick. It takes a disaster and shrinks it into the emotional burden of exceptional men. Even though grief remains paternal, it can become managerial.
Rather than confront genocidal actions, Infinity War wants to reflect on the individual anguish to sanctify the suffering. Tony actually mirrors Thanos. Obviously, he fights against genocide; he embodies the same paternalistic logic of control and sacrificial management. While Tony wants to protect Peter, Peter is a symbol of mourning. The film turns him into a vessel for fatherly grief. So when the bodies pile up, Infinity War does not confront oppression as a system. Thanos solves scarcity with extermination. The Avengers answer destruction with individualized heroics. Both are stuck in capitalist fantasy. One is genocidal. The other is sentimental. That is the film’s bleakest confession: it cannot imagine a future that belongs to the collective, only one inherited through sacrifice and administered by superheroes.
