Somehow even more compelling upon rewatch. Of course a lot of that is knowing where the story is headed this time and picking up on new details for a better understanding of what’s actually happening, but it’s also due in large part to the performances. I appreciated McGregor’s performance much more this time around. Initially I thought he was good, but not great and a little underwhelming. This time, watching his ability to grasp what is real slowly crumble while the camera cuts and angles gradually get more ominous and frantic was brilliant. Gosling was even better this time around as well. I always say that nobody does subtlety quite like him, and that’s as true as ever, but he kills the more deranged moments too. I was able to pay more attention to Watts’ character this time, and was really intrigued by her character and performance.
I still have several questions, and I’m fascinated to know if I’m supposed to be able to work out how these circumstances are taking place, but I certainly get what the story is. This probably sounds like rambling, but I just have a lot of thoughts about this film.
If you’ve never given this film a second watch, I highly recommend it because my entire experience was enhanced.
Edit: about 5 minutes after writing this I had an epiphany about this film. Idk if it’s right, but I’m shocked I didn’t come to this conclusion sooner
