Journey To My Top 25: Third times the charm. After this film not even being on my radar this time last year, I can honestly say I adore it.
Stay is a compelling psychological thriller that features some of my favorite editing and cinematography of all time. The editing is the highlight here; the way that it’s made integral to the narrative makes it even better. The increasingly more frantic camera cuts, angles and resets really intensify the mystery. I think the script here is great, with just enough clues to give your brain something to hang onto without giving anything away.
The performances are all relatively subtle, but very strong. I think this is one Gosling’s more nuanced roles, and he nails the subtle and aggressive bits. Watts leaves an impression despite not having that much to do, and McGregor slowly losing his grip on reality gets better to me every time.
I love the way the film balances the themes of mental illness, death, and reality without feeling overcrowded. The film is also jam-packed full of details you will not notice on first watch. Overall, this is a highly underrated film, and now one of my favorites.
