Psycho
Yes I know, I’m finally watching Psycho?? It only took till my third year of film school to view this and again, this is another example of Hitchcock’s genius.
Firstly, this is strikingly different from his other films. This feels more exploitative than his other films that rely on clever writing alongside its visual techniques.
The film succeeds in how and when it divulges information which leads to its narrative impact. The first act of this film is interesting as its narrative isn’t as engaging as the second, but the way the films able to intertwine both of these narratives is super unique and I applaud Hitchcock for that. Not a lot goes into the Psychologly of Norman Bates, where this is something that’s expected of modern thrillers like this, but it is able to elicit who he is with visual significance and his performance is absolutely miraculous.
I know the shower scene is often praised and I understand that but can we talk about the scene afterwards where he cleans up the room and destroys the car. It lasts for a good amount of time and is absolutely shocking to watch.
