Psycho
Still brilliant! Read the screenplay this time and I’m not sure if it’s specific to older screenplays but the dialogue blocks were thick! I have been told that is not what you do, but regardless, some good details there.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to give this five stars mostly due to the first half of the film. I do think this structure of switching main characters is really unique, but the pacing of it is quite jarring. But…it’s cool, so fuck it, right?
I think, maybe it’s because I’ve seen the film so many times, but the narrative occurring isn’t really what sells for me, it’s much more the tension that is being portrayed. The performances, especially Norman’s, absolutely sell. But…once we get to the end of the movie with Sam and Lila at the motel…that’s all peak!
Like, the scene with Dr. Simon explaining it all? It’s just such a great horror element, this certain psychological breakdown. And Norman in the detention room? It’s creepy as fuck.
Lastly, this is just so much fun. Any movie I could just put on whenever, I’m down. I will say, this film does have less plot points than most films of this length, but that’s another way through studying screenplays where I can see there isn’t entirely a key amount required.
