The Thing

Just an all around perfect movie. John Carpenter’s technical brilliance behind the camera is unmatched by any other horror filmmaker in my opinion. He not only directs the shit out of this, but also crafts one of the most eerie and terrifying scores I’ve ever heard. Additionally, the special effects are truly outstanding and never fail to make my jaw drop in awe. From the chest that opens up to reveal one of the guys is a thing to the crawling head that gets torched and from the ginormous monster that tries to kill Kurt Russell near the end to the goretastic autopsy scene that includes a gnarly looking split face, the pure artistry on display is something I highly admire. Movies just aren’t made like this anymore and it really breaks my heart. One of the best thing about this is how batshit crazy everybody gets. These guys are tired, they don’t fucking trust each other, they are trapped in an icy hellscape with a freaky alien, and they just wanna kill the motherfucker. I highly adore the concept of this movie and how the characters don’t know who’s an alien and who’s not. It’s a simple premise but it’s one that has been redone so many times since this released. This is a movie all about trust and I love that so much because we as humans have such a strong tendency to not trust others and to question things that we don’t fully believe. Carpenter takes those themes/ideas and exquisitely uses them in order to create a thought provoking horror film experience for the ages. It’s also just a really fun movie that is always a blast to watch. It’s iconic, it’s an 80s staple of the horror genre, Kurt Russell is hot, John Carpenter is a master, the blood test scene is peak, the explosions are amazing, and the ending is oh so amazing. Also, the snow looks so good. The Thing is the best horror movie ever made, it’s just the truth guys. It might not be my favorite, but it’s definitely the greatest.
