Coriolanus
This is a cool one for me because it’s a movie I found for myself. It was also the film that made me understand and appreciate Shakespeare. I’d only heard him read like in English class with class members assigned parts and because we didn’t know how to read it, you don’t hear the meaning. In Coriolanus, you hear the meaning.
It’s not perfect but I do really enjoy it. A weird issue I noticed was there were some scenes that just didn’t seem in focus. Like the focus puller just wasn’t dialed in or something. Some of the editing felt kinda abrupt. The cuts felt really sharp and stiff sometimes. It’s got a very natural almost documentary feeling but the set design and the color grade really coordinates with Ralph Fiennes eyes which just really pops. I love when movies do that.
Kinda bonkers performances all around with an absolute stacked cast. It gets really in the weeds with politics but it’s pretty easy to parse out through their performances.
Not the best film of all time but a really strong adaptation of a lesser known and harder to tackle Shakespeare piece.
