Rocketman
So this is either my 5th or 6th watch of the film and every time I think I like it just a bit more. My last few watches have all been with friends or family, so it was nice to sit in my basement at 3am and put on this film at a volume low enough that my parents can’t hear 2 floors up, but loud enough to really get me in that mood.
Whenever I hit start it and I hear “The Bitch is Back” start playing I just wanna get up and dance. Same with “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” as they both need to be played loud and proud. I just get practically sucked into the screen whenever a big musical number starts playing and just everything around me feels like it doesn’t even exist. When a movie does something like that so well where you completely forget about reality and you resonate with it so much, and other do as well, you know you’ve got a winner.
And the same goes with the smaller scale songs like “I Want Love” that really get you into the family dynamic of Elton’s life. I love how it doesn’t just keep the characters as sort of a Dursley type of asshole family but gives them some sort of depth.
I’m really just glad that Elton was such a big part of the production and how he didn’t censor a lot because he wanted his story told the right way. It takes a lot to tell your story about all of your addictions and make it seem like a fantasy without glamorizing all of it.
Fucking bravo!
