Zodiac
2007 | David Fincher | Jake Gyllenhaal | Mark Ruffalo | John Carroll Lynch | Philip Baker Hall
After I finished reading Robert Graysmith's book "Zodiac" yesterday, I decided to watch David Fincher's film again. With all the background knowledge from the book, which of course goes into some parts of the investigation etc in more detail, since the film, had it included everything, would probably have been 10 hours long, I can almost appreciate the film even more. Because the film is so in love with the details, both with regard to the recreation of the Bay area in the different years, the recreation of the San Francisco Chronicle and also with regard to the murders, the victims, the places of the murders, the investigation and basically everything else. In addition, it is really great to be able to fully understand every little detail that in the film is only mentioned on the side.
The film looks great, has great framing, great color grading, great cinematography and uses CGI so effectively and appropriately, and the score and sound design are also excellent. I think I can never hear the song "Hurdy Gurdy Man" again without thinking about the film. Fincher's direction is on point and the film is so perfectly paced that there is not a single second in which there is even a bit of boredom and more than two and a half hours fly by and the film pulls you deep into the case and strongly encourages you to take part in the puzzle and to think and although you know how the case will end and what will happen, you are always excited. In addition, the film manages to create a moment in the last 40 minutes that makes the hair on your neck stand up. When Robert Graysmith is in a certain person's house, and when it comes to the basement, the film becomes extremely tense and thrilling like no other.
In addition, the acting performances of each actor are really outstanding. Robert Downey Jr. as Paul Avery delivers one of his best performances and plays absolutely great and Mark Ruffalo fits perfectly into the role of Dave Toschi. John Carroll Lynch is outstanding as Arthur Leigh Allen and manages to convey his various facets and intelligence as well as his threatening presence perfectly. Jake Gyllenhaal is of course especially great as Robert Graysmith, the author of the book on which the film is based, and plays the increasing obsession with the killer on point and he delivers one of the best performances of his career. Also all the supporting actors, from those who play the victims to those who play the cops, everyone is great.
"Zodiac" is one of my all-time favorite films and definitely one of the best, maybe even the best true crime film. The film is perfect in every way and perfectly portrays the story and investigation of one of the most interesting and mysterious serial killers in history.
