Mission: Impossible Ranked
Top 4 are pretty much equal in quality, and Ghost Protocol to Fallout is the perfect triple feature. See notes for more details.
1) GHOST PROTOCOL (5/5) - perhaps one of the weakest villains elevated by some great set-pieces. The Kremlin scene made me fall in love with the franchise as much as the more iconic moments of Cruise scaling the Burj or the climax.
2) ROGUE NATION (5/5) - pretty much equal to each other, most underrated McQ film by a mile, perhaps the best structured M:I film. Best pacing, a great script and super well directed.
3) M:I 1 (4.5/5) - imo the most visually compelling film in the franchise?
4) FALLOUT (4/5) - very rewatchable, great set-pieces. Again, as great as a lot of the helicopter and chase sequences are, the HALO jump —> the club —> the bathroom fight is just immaculately constructed to be some of the most fun action scenes in the franchise and the genre. Cavill is a welcome presence. The new cast is excellent.
5) M:I III (3.5/5) - despite a slightly higher rating due to PSH I think it’s as good as 2.
6) M:I 2 (3/5) - way too much hate for this one.
7) FINAL RECKONING (2.5/5) - perhaps the least rewatchable in the franchise but the submarine sequence and the biplane sequence keep it more texturally and visually exciting than DR for me. I also think the film juggles too many characters for a film so focused on Ethan and not so much on the “team” or the supporting cast.
8) DEAD RECKONING (2.5/5) - hopefully this grows on me with time, but the stunt work while conceptually interesting had too much CGI work for me, and I’m just not of a fan of the exposition. Besides the main three stunts, I actually think the dialogue is slightly better than FINAL RECKONING, but I’m just not a fan of how they executed the Ilsa plotline and a lot of small details regarding the Entity. Gabriel is also not a strong antagonist, and unlike Ghost Protocol or M:I 2 the film isn’t engaging enough to distract from that. And let’s face it, Esai Morales can’t pull off a PSH situation here.
