The MatthewFBridges Official Cinematic Canon (See notes)

The MatthewFBridges Official Cimematic Canon is a collection of feature films, documentaries, short films, limited series, TV shows and concert films deemed of great significance to the art of filmmaking by me, whether it's importance lies in film theory, the way it addresses The Human Condition, sociological aspects, artistically, technically, etc. is discussed in the notes for each film.

Though most films here are of high quality, there are a few I dislike (namely Dune (1984) and sex, lies and videotape). Their inclusion is nonetheless important, which is further expressed in each note.

It’s tough to say which films of the modern era will have a profound influence on cinema to come. There’s some that have proved to be influential on filmmaking already (The Dark Knight, The Royal Tenenbaums, Memories Of Murder) but in some cases they are too new to properly have their influence realised. These films are still included and analysed in their notes as to why they are included.

List is in chronological order, with the exception of The Godfather Part I and II as they are best taken as one complete piece. This list will be updated whenever I see a film that belongs in this list.

For me, Cinema starts at The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Perhaps I’ll do a separate list someday of pre-The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari films important to the development of cinema, but it seems that is the true turning point as to when cinema became art.
